The relationship between megapixel and image quality

By Jakob Jelling

A megapixel is a measure of quantity used in digital video. This way, megapixels are based on pixels and measure the amount of visual data captured by the camcorder which together form each digital video picture and movie we will be able to watch. But this measure might be very tricky since, despite what we would tend to believe, it does not completely determine the image quality which a camcorder will produce.

Despite what is commonly thought, choosing a camcorder according to how many megapixels it has is not correct. One camcorder which has more megapixels than another is not necessary better since megapixels is not a measure of quality and, therefore, a camcorder which offers more of them than another does not guarantee a better image.

This way, those who are looking for a new camcorder and find out that some of them offer more megapixels as one of the main advantages, should ask how does that affect the image quality. Image quality and the amount of megapixels are two different things, and one of them does not necessarily imply the other.

Another important factor to consider is the fact that not all megapixels are equal. Some camcorders use megapixels of a bigger size than others, and therefore, although they had the same amount of megapixels the quality of their images would be different. This also explains why one camcorder with more megapixels than another does not necessarily produce better images.

If you wish to know which the resolution capabilities of a camera are, you should not base your opinion on how many megapixels it has but instead you should test it and watch images produced by it. Although it might sound confusing, a 3 megapixel camera could be much better than a 5 megapixels one depending on the other factors which take part on the image quality they produce. The camera as a whole, with all its different parts influencing the final product, will determine the quality of its images. This way, the best way in which we can be sure of how good the image quality of a camera is, is by actually testing it and observing the images its produces.
