Digital camera aperture - Eyes to the world

By Jakob Jelling

Purchasing the digital camera does not make the complete process functional. Understanding of its every aspects is also necessary for the total possession of the device and its ecstasy. One such thing is the digital camera aperture. A very common question for a digital camera user or beginner is what is digital camera aperture? This is because one of the very first specifications mentioned in the technical specifications book is its maximum aperture and/or its aperture range. To avenge this so very common question a definition that is most suitable is as follows. The primary function of a digital camera lens is to collect light. The aperture of the digital camera lens is the diameter of the lens opening and is usually proscribed by an object called the iris. The bigger the diameter of the aperture, the greater amount of light reaches the film and in case of a digital camera it reaches the image sensor. The rest of this discussion is aimed at enhancing the understanding and knowledge regarding this minute yet so important feature.

Through introspection reveals that digital camera apertures are expressed as F-stop, e.g. F2.8 or f/2.8. The smaller the F-stop number or f value, the larger becomes the lens opening that is formally known as the digital camera aperture. These values for any particular digital camera can be found in the technical user manuals nowadays. It is to be noted that many such manuals refer to saying f/value as simply "aperture value" as a different way of expressing the same concept. In common practice, the aperture of a digital camera lens is usually expressed as ranges of f-stops. For example max. aperture F2.6 means simply the maximum aperture for the lens is F2.6. And aperture range F2.8-F8.0 states that the maximum and minimum aperture, with the assumption such that there are typical increments between these two extreme values.

Considering some more intricacies of the digital camera and the digital camera aperture, a few more commonly used factors get into light. They are the fact that a fast lens is one that has an outsized maximum aperture (F2.4, F2.0 for recent digital cameras; and F1.4, F1.2 for 35mm film cameras). Again, big maximum aperture is preferable to a small one for the reason that it gives the photographer more flexibility in the kind of pictures that can be photographed by him or her under the circumstances available. This also enables the photographers to use a faster shutter speed to freeze action. However, in digital cameras operating in auto mode the camera automatically selects a shutter speed and the appropriate aperture as per the requirements of the image or the photograph.

Thus it is now clear that a large maximum aperture is a preferable. It consents to more light reaching the image sensor, and so allows the photographers to use a faster shutter speed, which in turn freezes action and opposes the effect of camera shake, resulting in pictures that are not blurred. And it is also a fact that a small minimum digital camera aperture is preferable to a large one since it gives the photographer more room in the kind of pictures that can be taken.

Hence with the above discussion it is clear what are the important aspects of a good digital camera aperture and its relevant functions. Knowledge is always helpful and every person must effectively gather knowledge in order to open up one's eyes to the world. And as for the digital camera, the aperture is eyes wide open to take up all the beauties of eternity!
