Wildlife photography using a digital camera

By Jakob Jelling

A lot of craze exists regarding the concept of wildlife photography among the common, novice as well as expert photographers. But the unavailability of suitable means, forbid these people from being revealed to the reality of this fantastic profession. However with the advent of the digital camera the world of wildlife photography has been revolutionized. What is known now as the digital wildlife photography is up on the heels nowadays and can be very interesting to explore. Actually most of the time people needed a long lens to get good wildlife pictures. Quality telephoto lenses are expensive and this made things more complicated and restrictive in nature for them. But a new breed of digital cameras are making wildlife photography much more affordable. This discussion is focused toward this goal.

Generally though, wild animals are not that obliging. The subject, say a group of animals, could be 550m away. Looking through a good pair of binoculars, a person can focus, only later, when the photographs are processed, is it obvious that the group was too far away to make a good picture. The answer lies in a digital camera with a powerful zoom lens. There are a number of digital cameras available today with 10x zoom lenses, which at their maximum zoom range will gives a close to the magnification that person can get with a 400mm lens on a normal 35mm camera.

The advantages of these cameras are as follows. Big zoom ranges are integral portions of these cameras, which allow wide-angle scenic pictures, yet powerful enough to zoom in on more distant subjects. Another aspect is a wide maximum aperture usually around F3.5 that allows shooting in lower light at a shutter speed that minimizes camera shake. This is again advantageous in case of using a digital camera, and is thus a boon for the concept of digital wildlife photography. Another important point regarding these cameras for digital wildlife photography are that they are affordable, not at all as highly priced as the 400mm F4 lens (Canon's 400mm F4 image stabilized lens with Diffractive Optics that costs about $5,000). It must be noted that at the moment Olympus offers the widest choice in this category of digital cameras.

The features can be summed up further as a full zoom of virtually about 400m F3.7 lens that is excellent for wildlife photography as it can bring those distant subjects or wildlife creatures up nice and really close, while the F3.7 maximum aperture allows a faster shutter speeds and fewer blurred pictures as a result of camera shake. The digital camera has a 4-megapixel sensor that produces images 2288 x 1712 pixels in size that are enough resolution to give a photographic prints of 16" x 12" or even bigger. One such quite popular digital camera is the widely loved Olympus C-2100 UZ of2 mega pixels. This camera has 38-380mm lens also.

Here again a lot of important information has been discussed in this discussion and the above lines are potent enough to provide necessary as well as sufficient knowledge to novice as well as expert users of the digital cameras in extraordinary and exciting endeavors of wildlife photography!
