Shutter controls - In an eye blink

By Jakob Jelling
Snapjunky.com

One of the most fascinating parts of a digital camera is the shutter! Just like the human eyes blink; an analogy can be drawn between it and the digital camera shutter. It is a device that can ultimately define the future of the photograph after all the minute adjustments of various components. So the shutter control plays a very important in the overall working of a digital camera. Basically, in very simple words, the shutter is a piece of equipment that opens and closes at changeable speeds to settle on the quantity of time the light entering the aperture is permitted to get in touch with the film. And the shutter keeps out light from entering the camera except during times of an exposure, during which time it opens and allows light to strike the image sensor. The duration of time for which the shutter is open affects the exposure of the image. Thus a good investigation to make the appropriate use of this shutter control requires to be explored.

Looking in greater detail, the shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second, for example shutter speed 80 means 1/80 of a second. Generally shutter speeds are available in the range of 1 second to 1/1000 of a second. As per general concept, in digital camera the exposure is more to light for a longer period of time during night or cloudy times rather than areas of day light and thereby the shutter are less during night or cloudy times compared to shooting during the daytime. Thus slower shutter speeds allow greater light to enter the digital camera and strike the image sensor producing an image lighter. And similarly, fast shutter speeds allow less light to enter the digital camera and strike the image sensor and produce the image darker. This is the technological concept underlying the entire concept of shutter speed control in digital camera.

For precise calculations, a light meter is used for determining the appropriate shutter speed. Aperture controls and shutter control settings function in concert. The reason is that shutters as well as the apertures more or less halves or doubles the amount of light entering the digital camera with every alteration in the settings. As per traditions or conventions there are some predetermined values of the shutter speeds of digicams. They are 1/1000, 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 second.

The importance of shutter speed control lies in the fact that controlling the shutter speed is the most important control that any photographer has over the way motion is incarcerated in a photograph. The duration of time the shutter remains open affects the exposure of the image as well as how motion is depicted in it. Thus proper understanding of the shutter speed control if a digital camera enables a photographer to determine whether a moving image will appear sharp or blurred in the photograph.

Much of the superficial and preliminary concepts of the shutter speed control of digital cameras lie in the above lines. Thus this discussion is an attempt to uncover the secrets towards making an attempt towards achieving perfection in the art of photography with the latest in technology, the digital camera, and this unison helps a person capture the beauties of nature, frozen for eternity, at the click of a shutter!
